Read the Bible Through in a Year: Day 46

Psalms 18-20

Psalm 18: This psalm is David’s prayer to the Lord in which David praises the Lord for making him victorious over his enemies. Second Samuel 5, 8, and 10 are companion chapters, and 2 Samuel 22 provides another version of this psalm. Second Samuel 22:1 tells us David composed Psalm 18 on the day the Lord delivered him from his enemies and Saul. Second Samuel 19 reports David’s victorious return to Jerusalem after David defeated his enemies. I love this Psalm, it is a beautiful reminder of how God cares for us. If you’re struggling with what to pray today, pray verses 1-3:

“I love you, Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. I called to the Lord, who is worthy of praise, and I have been saved from my enemies.”

He has indeed saved us from our enemies, sin and death. Thanks be to God!

Psalm 19: Another beautiful Psalm of praise to God. These verses are beautiful reminders today:

“The law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul. The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple. The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the Lord are radiant, giving light to the eyes. The fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever. The decrees of the Lord are firm, and all of them are righteous. They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the honeycomb” (19:7-10).

Here’s something we ought to pray everyday: “Let these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer” (19:14).

Psalm 20: This psalm was written by David as a prayer before he went into battle. I absolutely love verse 7:

“Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.”

And all of God’s people say, Amen. What stood out to you in today’s readings? Put your thoughts or questions in the Comments and let’s learn and grow together.
